The following is a list of clinically useful herbs discovered so far, as well as a brief physical description and how to obtain them.
Feverfew
Oftentimes, wheat stalks are transmutated into flowering feverfew by lingering earth magic. Studies reveal this universally occurs in 2% of all wheat crops.
Appears as branching clusters of daisies.
- Mainly used to treat fever, can also treat headaches and arthritis
- Leaves and flowers can be used fresh or dried to be put in tea or tinctures
- Edible, tastes very bitter and numbs mouth & throat
Lavender
Approximately 2% of all carrots spontaneously sprout these vibrant purple flowers from their stalks. Physiological effects inconclusive.
- Reduces scars and can be used as hygienic ointment. Possibly useful for treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression
- Can be used in tea for relaxation purposes. Hint of rosemary and minty tastes
- Ointment can be produced from lavender poultice and oil
Yarrow
Extremely self-sustaining cluster of white flowers, thrived around the starchy environment near potatoes planted nearby. Yet again, 2% of the potato crops were linked with these herbs.
- Can be used as a poultice to stop bleeding
- The leaves and flowers are used to make the poultice
- Can also be used to relax muscles and soothe cramps
- If prepared correctly, yarrow is commonly used in various dishes as a vegetable. However, can be toxic in large amounts
Henbane
1% of potato crops bear these toxic flowering leaves.
- Used in poisons, to put a person to sleep or make them hallucinate, typically sensation of flight.
- Can be used to sedate a patient before an operation.
Prunella
Found near 2% of beetroot crops as bright purple flowers sprouting from a central bulb. Nicknamed the “heal-all” plant for versatile regenerative properties.
- Can be used externally and internally to heal wounds.
- If harvesting for medical use, cut the flowering tops and dry them upside down in small bunches. Store these in a cool, dry, and dark location until ready to use
- Best used as an ointment. Crush up the flowering tops and add it to beeswax and oil
Pyrola
An additional 2% of all beetroots sport a long beet-red stalk with white flowers. Harvesting the stem gives pyrola.
- It’s juice has properties to stop bleeding, and is used as a poultice. Can be spread on the wound
- The juice can also be drunk for internal bleeding
- Edible, with a bitter-sweet taste
Sage
2% of leaves found on berry bushes have a rougher texture and grayish leaves. These are sage leaves, which can be harvested by simply plucking the berries and looking for any of these leaves dropping.
- Guards against many diseases, and is very tasty
- If putting sage in tea, gently pick off the leaves along the stem. Be careful not to pull too hard. Tea tastes slightly minty
- Edible!
Deadly Nightshade
When a berry bush is harvested, corrupted life magic coalesces around the organic materials and is absorbed by the berries. This necrotic reaction produces deadly nightshade berries, a rather poisonous variant. 1% of berries are affected on average.
- Used in poisons. Also used as pain cream in moderation.
- Be very careful when applying this cream. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly afterward to prevent ingesting it accidentally.
- If planning to use it for poisons, you only need to use a minuscule amount. Even that much can send full-grown adults into paralysis, cause severe hallucinations, delirium, confusion, convulsions, and death.
- Symptoms may begin within half an hour. It will take three to five days to kill you, seek antidote as soon as you notice them arise
Psilocybin Mushroom
Obtained from rare patches of mushrooms found in the wilderness. Must be harvested using an iron sickle.
- Recreational psychedelic uses
- Hallucinogenic effects usually occur within 30 minutes after ingestion and last four to six hours.
- Can be consumed through tea or food to mask its bitter taste
- Can be a treatment for anxiety
There are two distinct conventions for preparing herbal medicine: tinctures and poultices.
A tincture is classified as a concentrated liquid herbal extract made from plants and used as herbal medicine, taken orally.
A poultice is classified as a paste made of herbs, plants, and other substances with healing properties. They are meant to be applied directly onto the skin. Herbs like pyrola and yarrow can produce poultices by grinding them in a mortar and pestle, then mixing with water. If you’re desperate, you can chew up these herbs in your mouth and use that as an elementary poultice.
The following list aims to provide a comprehensive guide for preparing useful medicine from the previous list of herbs. Have some empty bottles ready, it's time to brew.
