The new Factions and Nations system is currently in the process of a limited beta roll out, it's only available to Nations.
Once ready to be taken out of beta, it'll receive a full release and everyone will have access to it, including Factions!
Factions and Nations are the heart of player-ran lore and gameplay in TallTalesRP. This page will discuss how leaders can manage their Faction and Nation, if you want to find out how both work (including creating them), read this page.
In TallTalesRP, we provide a large system for leaders to manage almost every aspect of their Faction or Nation on their own. Such as adding and managing members, creating roles and assigning permissions, claiming chunks and managing them and much more.
All Faction and Nation commands will work by using either /faction or /nation (also /n works for short).
Selecting a Faction or Nation
Before you can start interacting with a Faction or Nation, let alone manage it you must select it by typing a command in game.
/faction select - opens a menu with a view of all Factions or Nations you either lead or are a member of.
Once you’ve selected a Faction or Nation in this menu, you’ll be able to interact with its land (such as build, use blocks, etc) and if you’ve got the right role and permissions set, you can manage things (such as manage members, roles, etc).
Remember to run the command again if you want to switch to a different Faction or Nation.
Commands
We aim to cover most important Faction and Nation commands with detailed descriptions in this document.
However, if you’d like a quick and simple overview of all commands, you can also refer to the Commands page here.
Faction/Nation commands haven't been added to the Commands guide yet. They will after full release, when the system is available for everyone!

Factions & Nations System
This section aims to provide as much detail as possible on almost all the systems built for Factions and Nations. There are also some differences between the two, some features are only accessible to Nations, while others only accessible to Factions.
All Faction and Nation commands will work by using either /faction or /nation (also /n works for short).
Open the main menu for the Faction or Nation you’ve got selected by typing either /faction or /nation.
The menu will look different, with varying features depending on whether you’ve selected a Faction or a Nation.
This feature is available to both Factions and Nations. Factions are limited to claiming the amount of chunks their level allows, Nations can claim up to an amount decided on with Admins.
Two commands can be used to claim chunks:
- /faction claim - claims the chunk you’re standing on.
- /faction claim -auto - turns on auto claiming, every chunk you walk into is claimed.
Claiming a chunk will not work if you’re too close to or within another Faction or Nation’s claim or you’re within a server region (Primshire, lore ruins, etc).
Open the main menu and click “Manage Land” to manage claimed chunks:
- All claimed chunks show up as buttons in this menu. Hover to view important info like:
- Chunk Location
- Access Limits (Nations only)
- Land Degradation (Factions only)
- Depending on the Land Degradation level, the button will look different (Factions only)
- Level 0: Grass Block (0%)
- Level 1: Podzol (20%)
- Level 2: Mycelium (40%)
- Level 3: Coarse Dirt (60%)
- Level 4: Dirt (80%)
- Level 5: Land Unclaimed (fully degraded)
Click a chunk to open its edit menu where you can set the access limits or unclaim the chunk.
Alternatively, use commands to open the Land Management menus:
- /faction land - opens land management menu
- /faction chunk - opens edit chunk menu for the chunk you’re standing on
Land Degradation (factions only)
Claimed land will degrade over time if you don’t pay Faction Upkeep, this is known as Land Degradation. Every upkeep payment that’s missed will cause a handful of chunks to slowly degrade until they’re unclaimed.
It will take time for land to degrade, but it will begin happening after the first time you miss your faction upkeep cost deadline. Here’s how land degrades:
- Degradation levels: 5 levels before a chunk is unclaimed.
- Selection interval: Every 8 hours, 5 recently claimed chunks are selected.
- Degradation chance per chunk: 65% chance for each chunk to have its degradation level increased.
- Missed upkeep: The chance of degradation increases by 5% every bi-weekly period (every 2 weeks) that upkeep is missed.
- First missed deadline: 65%
- After 2 weeks: 70%
- After 4 weeks: 75%
- And so on.
- Unclaiming: A chunk is unclaimed after it reaches 5 levels of degradation.
If you miss faction upkeep for multiple bi-weekly periods, the degradation process speeds up significantly. The first chunks will unclaim after around 2.6 days, but after 8 weeks of missed upkeep, all 81 chunks could be unclaimed.
Land Access Limits (nations only)
Access Limits let you broadly define who should be able to use a chunk you’ve claimed.
You can change a chunk’s Access Limit by clicking on a chunk in the Land Management menu to edit it and then looking at the Access Limit button (command block).
These are the different Access Limits:
- ANY VISITOR - lets anyone build on and use your claimed chunk, including people who aren’t members.
- ANY MEMBER - lets anyone added to your faction build on and use your claimed chunk.
- SPECIFIC ROLE - lets a specific role build on and use your claimed chunk.
Access Limits can be considered an easier way to give people access to chunks than setting the individual permissions. For finer control, use role permissions.
Factions and nations have full control over members. From being able to add members, easily remove them, assign roles and view all members easily.
Adding Members
Adding members to your Faction can be done via a command, or directly in the Faction management menu. When adding someone, you’ll be prompted to select the character to invite.
Players must accept invitations to Factions in order to actually be added.
Invite someone to your Faction using:
- /faction add <player>
- …or directly in the member management menu.
Remove a member you’ve added with /faction remove <player>.
Managing Members
Once a player has accepted an invitation, you’ll be able to easily manage them in the member management menu.
Open the main menu and click “Manage Members” to manage members:
- All members show up as player heads. Hover to show important info like:
- Their primary role
- Whether they’re online or offline
Click a player head to manage a specific member, where you can edit their roles or remove them from the Faction.
Alternatively, use commands to open the Member Management menus:
- /faction members - opens the member management menu
- /faction members <member> - opens the edit menu for the specified member
Both Factions and Nations have access to creating and customising roles which you can assign different permissions to and also optionally create an order of hierarchy by setting weights.
Open the main menu and click “Manage Roles” to manage roles:
- All roles you created will show as lecterns. Hover to show important info:
- Weight of the role
- Number of members with the role
- You can add a new role by clicking the “Create a Role” button
Click a lectern to start editing the role or add permissions to it. Learn more about what you can edit, as well as permissions below.
Creating Roles
You can create a role using:
- /faction roles create
- …or directly in the role management menu.
Once you start creating a role, you’ll be prompted to enter all necessary information to make the role. Similarly to how you create a character.
Those same things you enter can be edited later by clicking a lectern in the role management menu. Here’s a run down of the info you’ll need to enter:
Role Name
This is the name of the role and will be used whenever referring to this role. You can set it to anything, so long as it’s appropriate and follows server rules.
Role Color
This is the color of the role. The name of the role will be set to this color. You can use any HEX code, or use one of the predefined colors provided.
Role Weight
Defines the order of the role in your Faction hierarchy. The lower the number, the higher it is in the hierarchy - so 1 would be at the top of the hierarchy, 10 would be lower. Multiple roles can have the same weight too, they’ll appear ‘the same’ in the hierarchy.
Use /faction hierarchy to view a list of your role hierarchy.
Permissions
After creating a role, you can assign permissions to it. Permissions define what members with that role can do within the Faction or Nation. Permissions also allow for more fine-grained control as opposed to Access Limits.
To grant, or revoke permissions from a role, you must open the edit menu for a role in the role management menu and then click the “Permissions” button. You’ll then be presented with another menu that has several categories with their permissions in them - navigate through the categories by clicking the buttons at the top and then grant or revoke permissions by clicking any of the Book buttons under the categories.

Upkeep is required for only Factions. This section is not relevant if you’re a Nation!
Faction Upkeep is a payment that Factions must submit every two weeks and it ensures that their claimed land can be kept up to standards. If a Faction fails to meet their upkeep, chunks will slowly degrade over time until they’re all unclaimed or upkeep is paid.
The process of chunks unclaiming when upkeep isn’t met is called Land Degradation. This section will focus on how to pay upkeep, click here to read more about the process of Land Degradation.
Keep track of your upkeep and pay it by using:
- /faction upkeep
- …or directly in the main Faction menu.
When using either of the above, the Faction Upkeep menu will open. Inside this menu you’ll see a few different things:
- Empty slots to place your upkeep cost into. Silver or gold should go in these empty slots - they’ll be automatically taken out when the upkeep is due.
- Land Degradation info button to view how many of your chunks have been fully degraded due to missing upkeep.
- Upkeep info button to view how much your upkeep costs and when the next due date is.
- Submit now button to submit your upkeep early instead of waiting until it’s automatically taken out on the due date.
You’ll be notified in chat when upkeep is nearing its due date. The cost of upkeep depends on your unlocked Faction level - to view information on Faction levels, click here.
Levels are only available to Factions. This section is not relevant if you’re a Nation!
Faction Levels will let you increase the limit on the amount of chunks you can claim and the amount of roles you can create, but comes at the cost of a higher upkeep cost. This section covers how to view your current level and upgrade it. For information on exactly what you get in each level, click here.
Open the Faction levels menu to view your current level and upgrade it using:
- /faction levels
- …or directly in the main Faction menu.
Inside the Faction levels menu, you’ll see buttons for the three levels a Faction can upgrade to, as well as the perks they’ll receive per level and the upkeep cost. If you reach the required members to upgrade to a level, you can click that level’s button to upgrade to it.
The settings menu lets you control additional aspects of your Faction or Nation, such as Renaming Faction, Toggle Adding Members, Toggle Mob Spawning (Nations only) or Disbanding the Faction (Factions only).
Open the settings menu using:
- /faction settings
- …or directly in the main Faction menu.
Rename Faction
Click the “Rename Faction” button (nametag) in settings to change your Faction or Nation name. Only the Faction leader can access this.
Available to both Factions and Nations.
Toggle Adding Members
Click the “Toggle Adding Members” button (leather helmet) in settings to turn the ability for members to be added to your Faction and existing invitations to be accepted either on or off. Only the Faction leader can access this.
Available to both Factions and Nations.
Toggle Mob Spawning (Nations Only)
Click the “Toggle Mob Spawning” button (mob spawner) in settings to cycle through allowing both animals and monsters to spawn, only animals to spawn, only monsters to spawn or no animals and monsters to spawn. Access to this setting can be given to roles via a permission.
Available to only Nations.
Disband Faction (Factions Only)
Click the “Disband Faction” button (barrier) to disband and permanently delete your Faction. Once this button is clicked, the Faction will be disbanded after 24 hours and you can click the button again within this time to cancel the disbandment.
When a Faction is disbanded, it’ll be permanently deleted forever and it cannot be reversed.
Available to only Factions.
Citizenship settings are only available to Nations. This section is not relevant if you’re a Faction!
The citizenship settings allow you to change specific settings for members within your Nation, these settings can be seen as requirements that people must meet in order to join your Nation, or stay in it. Right now, there is only one setting available but more are planned!
Open the citizenship settings menu using:
- The “Citizenship” button (map) in the main Nation menu.
Dual Citizenships
This setting determines whether members are allowed to be in other Factions or Nations while also in your Nation. By default, dual citizenship is turned on.
The Dual Citizenship setting, as well as Citizenship Settings in general are only available to Nations.
Faction and Nation diplomacy allows you to declare your diplomatic status with other Factions or Nations. You can declare your allies, enemies or neutrality between others. Your diplomatic statuses that you set, or others set against you can be viewed in a list.
Set your Faction diplomacy using commands:
- /faction diplomacy ally <faction> - sets the specified faction or nation as an ally.
- /faction diplomacy enemy <faction> - sets the specified faction or nation as an enemy.
- /faction diplomacy neutral <faction> - sets the specified faction or nation as neutral.
To view diplomatic statuses you set, or what others set against you, use:
- /faction diplomacy - a full list of diplomatic statuses set by you and against you.
In the far future, we want to use this system to create possibilities for war systems and such for Factions and Nations - however for now, it can still open nice roleplay opportunities based on diplomatic relations.
Factions can set diplomacy with other Factions, but not with Nations. Nations can set diplomacy with any other Nation or Faction.
