S.VI. — Roleplay Rules

Roleplay Rules Table of Contents

Roleplay Rules

  1. Do not intentionally avoid RP.
    1. Using the OOC tag to avoid roleplay is not allowed. Players must do their best never to ignore, disregard, or intentionally avoid the roleplay of others.
    2. If you do not have the OOC tag on, you are subject to roleplay at any time.
  2. When you are out of character, use the OOC tag, toggleable with /ooctag in-game.
  3. Conducting troll or meme roleplay is against our rules; you may be silly in roleplay, so long as everything abides by the medieval fantasy aesthetic that the server preserves.
  4. Mechanical actions such as punching, using foci, mining, PvPing, and pulling items from your inventory are actions that are valid within roleplay. Things such as placing or breaking random blocks, unless it is abundantly clear you are building a house or nation, and breaking blocks to escape are not allowed in roleplay.
    1. Breaking doors and windows is separate; it must be rolled with STR, provided you have the owner's consent.
  5. Modern slang may not be used in roleplay.
    1. This includes phrases like “gyatt,” “rizz,” “sigma,” “skibidi,” and “gucci,” among others.
  6. Metagaming and powergaming are not allowed.
    1. Metagaming refers to the use of OOC knowledge to influence roleplay decisions, e.g., sharing coordinates OOCly, OOC trading, or showing up to a fight after being OOCly contacted by someone involved.
    2. Powergaming refers to the act of using game mechanics, external information, or a roleplay concept to favor a specific character or story and give them an unrealistic advantage, e.g., all ‘homeworld magic,’ ignoring character limitations, or forcing your character to land a hit without any prior reaction from the other character.
  7. Birds, whether your character is involved in combat or not, must be emoted in-game.
    1. There is no DC to shoot the bird down lest the individual sending the bird allows it.
    2. You may not send a bird in /quiet or /whisper. It must be done in either /rp or /shout.
  8. Acts of violence are not permitted within areas that are considered Safe Zones, even with OOC approval from the victim—the only exception is official arrests.
    1. Primshire is the only Safe Zone on the server at the moment.
  9. Avoid roleplay blurring and OOC bleeding at all times. There must be a clear separation between IC and OOC behavior and knowledge.
    1. If your personal feelings begin to bleed into roleplay, it is advised to take a step back and recuperate. You are not your character, and your character is not you.
  10. Players are required to adhere to any lore and continuity outlined for the server, regardless of their character's storyline, history, or personal desires, to maintain the lore and continuity.
  11. Explicit torture and mutilation are permitted only in private settings with the consent of all parties involved before the scene begins.
    1. Brief mentions in public are allowed, yet going into detail about the scene is not.
  12. Sexual and erotic roleplay is not permitted on the server at all, nor are any mentions of sexual and erotic roleplay allowed—this includes both in-game and on Discord.
    1. No explicitly describing erotic touching, kissing, or other mildly sexual activity.
    2. Erotic groaning, moaning, and other sexual audio is not acceptable while on the server, even if no actions are visible.
    3. As sexual abuse or violence is never allowed on the server, it should never be implied or referenced, even if part of a character’s backstory.
  13. Sensitive topics such as mental health, illness, and self-harm are permitted only in private settings with the consent of all parties involved before the scene.
    1. These topics should never be openly discussed in public settings such as Primshire, OOC chats, and Discord.
  14. Entering locked areas such as gates or houses through mechanical means, e.g., horse parkour, magic, is not permitted.
    1. Horse parkour is defined as using the perks of a horse—more speed and a higher jump—to get into areas that you may not be able to as a player.
  15. Factions and Nations must not be advertised OOCly. To advertise use the appropriate factions and nations advertisement channels, or do so in character. Peer pressuring players to join through persistence is not allowed.
Part A Character Death and Permanent Kills

Permadeath or “permanent death” (sometimes referred to as PK) refers to a player's character permanently losing their life in roleplay, unable to be revived again. All characters are mortal and, occasionally, permadeath is the best option for stories where a return would seem impossible, illogical, or ruin the flow of the surrounding storylines.

  1. When you choose to kill your character permanently, you must remove any relevant wardrobes of that character and remove the character slot.
  2. If you choose to have your character commit suicide, they will be permanently killed.
  3. If you utilize death as a way to escape roleplay, e.g., a sudden heart attack, /killme, then your character is permanently killed.
  4. If you choose to permanently kill your character in private lore, your character is permanently killed in public lore.
  5. Character death, particularly permanent kills, should be done with the OOC consent of all parties involved first.
  6. When an admin-enforced PK is placed upon your character, it may not be lifted unless the individual who placed the PK against your character chooses to lift it, or OOC motivations were found to be involved.
    1. Admin-enforced PKs may be placed for a variety of reasons, e.g., infamy, being a faction leader, political significance, one character maiming the other, or the characters’ family, etc. While this is up to the discretion of the Administrator handling the ticket, admin-enforced PKs are not taken lightly.
    2. Administration never asks for OOC reasons as to why the PK should be enacted.
  7. You must honor character life rules. If your character dies, pretend that your character has blacked out; they do not remember the context of their death nor any directly related events leading up to their death.
    1. Any items lost ICly due to CRP, PvP, or any relevant roleplay are forfeited. They may not remember how they lost their items.
    2. Honoring your character's life does not mean your character has to be afraid of death. However, they may not act as if they have multiple lives.
  8. You have approximately one week to reverse a permanent kill to your character that was not due to a hard-PK clause or admin-enforced PK.
Part B Crime RP, Villainy, and Kidnapping Rules
  1. Characters must have a sufficient reason to enact violence. A character may not be violently, persistently, and nonsensically disruptive.
  2. When encountering any villain characters anywhere outside of Primshire, you may not avoid this scenario.
    1. Villains may not rob you in Primshire, as Primshire is considered a safe zone.
    2. Villains may not kill your character without sufficient consent.
  3. Stealing from chests is disallowed, even if the chest may be unlocked or there is sufficient roleplay.
  4. Villain characters may not steal any items from your inventory that are soulbound. However, they may steal items that are not soulbound—this includes items such as currency, blocks, ores, and other similar items.
    1. Soulbound items are items that are lore-approved or MMO items. However, MMO items that do not drop on death are allowed to be stolen, an example being TallTalesRP’s currency.
  5. When entering a dedicated Crime RP zone, players do not need permission to kill your character—permanent kills still require OOC consent.
    1. Crime RP zones are outlined within your chat box, sending a message along the lines of “You will be subject to crime RP.”
    2. Graphic or sensitive roleplay must be communicated and consented to before the encounter.
  6. Characters who are kidnapped become roleplay-locked should the roleplay be paused. This means that they are not allowed to travel elsewhere ICly or OOCly while the kidnapper is offline.
  7. Characters who are kidnapped must be given RP opportunities by the kidnapper.
  8. Players cannot kidnap your character in Primshire because it is a safe zone; furthermore, kidnappers cannot force your character outside the barrier.
  9. Clear clues must be left for the characters to locate the kidnapped one.
  10. Anyone kidnapped may run if given the chance in RP; the kidnapper has 20 minutes to catch them before they may switch to OOC.
    1. While on the run, the kidnappees may not break or place blocks to aid their escape.
Part C Character Rules

All characters arrive in the world of Eldorath through mysterious and unknown ways. They come from distinct universes, each with its unique lore, all rooted in medieval fantasy. Your character wakes up on a ship with memories of their past, but they cannot recall how they ended up here.

If a Community Team member, Moderator, or higher-level user instructs you to modify or remove a skin because it does not align with the server’s theme, you must either delete the skin from your wardrobe or adjust it to comply with our guidelines.

Any supernatural capabilities beyond the average humanoid or Minecraft player (e.g., flight, fire-breathing, etc.) are nullified by magical means. Subtle effects or magical abilities are allowed, so long as they do not provide an advantage in roleplay, e.g., regeneration of a limb, night-vision, invisibility.

All damage must be considered, honored, and correctly taken seriously, even if your character does not seem to have organs and human biological organizations (cells, systems, organs, etc.). This means no instant regeneration in any case, no shrugging off any serious, life-threatening injuries, etc.—to ease the process, just think what would happen to a human if they had sustained the same damage.

Characters are allowed fewer limbs than two arms and legs—due to any reasons, such as losing them to a wound or a disease—as long as they have fewer than the maximum outlined!

  1. Characters may not be born in Eldorath.
  2. Players cannot play as any character other than their own, this does not include staff characters.
  3. Any third-party model you have on must reflect your character’s appearance and description, and must abide by our character rules.
  4. Your skin must be appropriate and match the persona you are currently playing.
    1. Your character’s description must match your character’s skin.
  5. Characters may not be younger than 7.
  6. Setting character names as blank or special characters is not allowed. This includes names such as “. . .”, “.”, or otherwise blank names.
    1. Characters are unable to recognize your character or know your character's name until told in character or otherwise. Doing so is considered metagaming, unless the character knows your character.
  7. The characters you own via /character may not know of each other's existence. This means that your characters may not interact with each other.
    1. This could lead to metagaming and unfair advantages in roleplay.
    2. These characters can be aware of each other but may not directly interact.
  8. Always have a realistic “Value of Life” when roleplaying—also known as fear roleplay.
    1. Your character does not have to fear death, but your character must not strive for death.
  9. Character design is not a valid reason for habitual violence; there must be adequate reasoning behind their actions.
  10. Your character must be appropriately clothed, meaning areas such as breasts for female-presenting characters and the crotch area must be covered by cloth or anything akin.
  11. Your character’s backstory may not reference memes, pop culture, famous people, or other existing media.
    1. This means that characters may not come directly from the Roman Empire, or come from the Ming Dynasty. That is to say, you may take inspiration by medieval time periods.
    2. This applies to skins as well.
  12. Character names must be realistic, inoffensive, and appropriate for the server theme. Names may not contain symbols, reference modern media, or purposefully use the same surname as another character or group without prior discussion.
    1. You may have character names from preexisting media, however the character must not reflect that character in any shape or form.
  13. Characters under the age of 18, as well as players, may not conduct romance roleplay at any level.
  14. Your character’s skin must fit our server’s theme of medieval fantasy.
    1. Beyond the sword and sorcery vibes, we’ve also opted to include the more artificery aesthetic in our server. Mechanomagical inventions, such as steampunk, are fine.
  15. While TallTalesRP is not set in a particular time period, it does require all characters to conform to a certain attire.
    1. No modern attire is permitted, e.g., jeans, hoodies, sneakers, sunglasses, baseball caps, etc.
    2. Characters may wear shorts, though they may not be “booty shorts.”
  16. All third-party cosmetic addons/models must follow all and any rules and guidelines outlined in the Character Rules and Banned Content Rules), in addition to the following:
    1. Models can not exceed the following sizes:
      1. Total avatar can not be larger than 3x3x3 blocks.
      2. Height changers can not exceed current server parameters: 2.25 blocks - 1.35 blocks. When using height changing models, we highly recommend using official server height changers.
    2. Trolling, fire starting and disruptive behaviour using third-party cosmetic addons is strictly prohibited.
      1. Trolling constitutes any intentional immersion-breaking, disruptive behavior done with malicious intent.
      2. The level of severity of 'trolling' will be up to moderator discretion.
    3. All third-party cosmetic rules apply both in-character and out-of-character.

On Younger Characters,

TallTalesRP categorizes characters as “young” if they are under the age of 16. These characters may have heavy restrictions due to the rating of the server at times, for example, the allowance of violence and substance abuse. So long as these scenarios do not lead to severe physical or emotional trauma or describe graphic consequences for the character, they are permitted.

We do acknowledge that there are certain situations in which potential trauma may be permitted, e.g., passing through the mist, witnessing injuries first-hand, dealing with potential homelessness, world events, etc. Because of this, situations like these are allowed, provided the results are not anything that causes serious harm to the character.

  1. Characters under the age of 16 in human years are not permitted to participate in combat scenarios that pose a risk to their safety.
    1. Dangerous combat scenarios are scenarios that will enact violence on the 16-year-old. Training is allowed so long as no harm comes from it.
    2. Scraping knees, having a tumble, or accidentally cutting themself, for example, is allowed so long as it does not result in a serious injury.
  2. Characters under the age of 16 in human years are not permitted to participate in substance abuse.
    1. Substance abuse is defined as consuming any sort of substance that will make the 16-year-old impaired, for example, consuming large quantities of alcohol.

What Is and Isn't Allowed Character-Wise

Any extraordinary features beyond simple fantasy racial traits are not permitted to remain with your character once they arrive in this world. Magic can only be accomplished through the server’s outlined, lore-approved methods.

If you have any confusion about whether a character design is allowed, please open a general lore ticket.

Allowed:

  • Multiple arms as long as they do not provide any advantage. They may only be used for flavor, never in any form of combat, with a maximum of 4 pairs.
  • Wings—they become vestigial and may not fly or glide. They may be used for flavor.
  • Horns, spikes, and most other keratin or bone extensions. They may not be used for fighting or defense. They may be used for flavor.
    • If the species dictates it, they are allowed to regrow at a non-noticeable rate (in a short period) from the root.
  • Antennae are allowed, but do not give any advantage to one's senses.
    • If the species dictates it, they are allowed to regrow at a non-noticeable rate (in a short period) from the root.
  • Cosmetic, magical effects like eyes made of fire, especially if they perform a biological function, or glowing body parts, especially if physiological, etc.
    • Light sources from the character's body may not provide enough light to see in the dark.
    • Elemental hair or anything similar does not retain most of its characteristics (heat, shapelessness, etc.) and somewhat behaves like a hologram with mass (when needed) instead. For example, passing a hand through fire hair does not burn you. They may be used for flavor.
  • Steam-powered (or earlier forms of automation) are allowed.
    • Steampunk is allowed only as an aesthetic.
    • Its concepts and technology are generally not allowed—it is on a case-by-case basis.
  • Characters with tails extending from the tail bone, while still having legs is allowed. They must not be used for any advantage and may not possess or carry weapons. They may be used for flavor.
    • If you wish to have a tail replacing the legs (e.g. fish/mermaid tails or snake-like lower halves), please refer to the last dot point in this section.
  • Multiple eyes, ears, horns, wings, tails, and certain other features are allowed and may be used for flavor. They must be within common sense, however.
    • They may not provide any advantage - no better hearing, no 360 vision, etc.
  • Characters must always be humanoid in the sense that there has to be a head and torso, however lower-halves of the body can be non-humanoid so long as you follow these guidelines:
    • We have a leg-pair limit of three (meaning six legs overall).
    • We allow centaur-like lower halves, insect-like lower halves, snake-like lower halves, mermaid/fish tail lower halves, etc.
    • Characters without legs must abide by in-character restrictions presented by their non-humanoid lower halves.
      • If your character can easily traverse land (e.g. snake-like lower halves), regular walking speed is acceptable, as well as sprinting speed (e.g. snakes slithering faster).
      • If your character cannot easily traverse land (e.g. mermaid/fish tail lower halves), you may travel on land using the /crawl mechanic, but cannot move faster on land than the /crawl speed. Otherwise, you can be carried.
    • If using a third party modification to alter your character model, you must abide by Rule 15 of Character Rules.

Not Allowed:

  • Your character may not have magic outside of what Eldorath bears, nor may they have superhuman traits. The mist is the ultimate equalizer.
    • No water breathing, no fire resistance, no super-strength, no extreme resistance, no water breathing, etc. - any trait retained has to be achievable by an average human.
    • This involves all boons and banes, such as blessings, curses, godlike powers, etc.
    • This does not mean that your character has to become bland or without things they excel in. For example, a Water Genasi can still RP their character, being acquainted with swimming and doing so with ease, even being slightly better than average, but it may not correspond to an advantage.
    • However, magic that allows your character to function like a human is allowed, but said magic becomes inaccessible to everyone and everything. (E.g., a magical construct retains the magic that makes it animated, but said magic cannot interface with anything else).
    • Receiving magic abilities, strengths, or powers through official server lore and events, approved by the Lore team, is allowed. Seeking them out for the sole purpose of powergaming or gaining an advantage is not allowed.
  • Your character may not have more than one head.
    • That said, your character may have multiple faces.
  • Your character may not be a formless slime; they must pick a form and stick with it. For all intents and purposes, their body is to behave like a normal one and may only use slime characteristics for flavor purposes (no incorporation, shifting the body to avoid hurts, etc.).
  • Shape-shifting of any kind is not allowed.
    • However, it may be used for very minor characteristics and only for flavor.
    • If your character could shape-shift/transform prior to entering the mist, it cannot no longer do that after entering the mist, whatever your character is upon entering Eldorath will be what it is permanently.
  • Your character may not be a being powered by electricity unless it is somehow physiological. (E.g., electrical impulses in neurons). Said electricity may not interface with the outer world outside of flavor.
  • Your character may not have any infectious diseases, or spread them! Your character can show long-lasting symptoms of it, but the character will be cured of the cause when passing through the mist, so as not to infect others.
    • Non-infectious diseases and illnesses are allowed, though you must remember that Eldorath may not have a cure for them. You may choose for a disease or infection to be healed, but generally, chronic issues will persist.
  • Your character may not be a giant or ant-like person. Your character must stay within the 7'5'' to 4'5'' range.
  • Your character may not talk to animals.
  • Instantaneous healing is not allowed; while characters may choose to heal minor cuts or bruises over time (est. three - five days), they may not heal major wounds, such as lost limbs, paralyzation, or major head injuries for example.
  • Your character may not be a full-on animal, such as a small, four-legged cat or a full-on camel.
Part D Combat Rules

All of these rules apply to TTRP’s CRP and Honor CRP as well as any existing CRP system. The exception to this statement is if a rule is strictly about mechanics involving rolling (rolling dice), which is not typical for honor CRP.

TallTalesRP utilizes a special CRP system, which is the norm in most CRP scenarios. To read further, please see this document: TalltalesRP - CRP Document.

  1. Attempting to take another player’s life using Minecraft’s in-game mechanics without sufficient player interaction is not allowed—all parties must have narrative reasons to initiate combat.
    1. Scenarios may involve in-game mechanics with the OOC consent for the involvement of in-game mechanics.
  2. You may no longer join a CRP encounter after 15 minutes have passed after the initial emote starting combat. This still applies even if you were contacted ICly.
    1. If both sides consent, the CRP lock may be lifted.
    2. To join a CRP encounter, you must spend one emote joining, and the second fighting.
    3. To leave a CRP encounter, you must spend two emotes leaving the encounter unimpeded.
  3. If there is a combat scenario with a group of eight or fewer, you may choose whether to fight PvP or CRP, with the defender choosing PvP or CRP.
    1. If there is a combat scenario involving a group of nine or more, the combat scenario defaults to PvP, unless both parties collectively decide to continue with CRP.
  4. Sending a bird while your character is involved in combat must take two turns unimpeded to send off successfully.
    1. You may not send the bird in /quiet or /whisper. It must be done in either /rp or /shout.
Part E — Guild, Commerce, and Blackboard Rules

These forums are for sharing miscellaneous notes, news, comments, or posts in character, either anonymously or otherwise. It is a place to communicate and advertise, not to post bounties, blackmail, or otherwise instigate crime roleplay. Please treat posting on this board as if your character is manually approaching the board, posting up a note, and leaving in-game and in the world.

The only exception to the instigating of crime roleplay is by posting notes on the blackboard, where darker notes, primarily those of kidnappings, blackmailing, or otherwise morally gray territory, will go. Posting bounties on the blackboard is not allowed; instead, they must be requested by any of the bounty handlers ICly.

Please heed the tags and tag your post correctly.

Guild Forum Rules

  1. All posts on the guild forum must be made in character; any notes made out of character must be marked accordingly and otherwise kept to a minimum.
  2. Posts and responses may not be torn down from the forum without consent from the original poster.
    1. The only exception is the Adventurers Guild employees, who may tear down posts at the Guild's discretion.
  3. Posts and responses that are torn down ICly must be deleted or modified in the Discord forum.
    1. Responses on a torn post are not required to be removed.
    2. If you commented on a post before it was removed, you may recall the contents of the post, though remember that longer posts may be more challenging to recall.
  4. Characters may post notes anonymously while disguised. However, this gives room for others to attempt to identify the anonymous poster.
    1. To identify an anonymous individual, roll a flat d20 in-game; a 15 or higher is a successful roll. Once done, send a screenshot of the roll in the DMs of the poster; any information learned is at the poster’s discretion.
  5. You may not create new posts on the forum if you have not been in-game for longer than one week.
    1. This forum is to help promote roleplay in-game, not to become an alternative to such.
  6. Players roleplaying as underage characters—younger than 16—are advised to post an OOC, spoilered message noting the character's age, to remind others reading to tread the post carefully and abide by our character rules.
  7. Acts of cannibalism depicted in Guild posts, or mentions of cannibalism is not allowed.

Commerce Board Rules

This board is used for advertising the sale or trade of items and services in-game. All items being sold must follow TallTalesRP’s guidelines.

  1. You may not sell anything that violates S.II — Banned Content, even if spoilered and adequately content warned.
  2. Illegal or meme items or services are not permitted.
  3. All posts on the commerce board must be made ICly and be followed up with in-game interactions.
    1. Treat this forum as you would the guild forum, with emotes and IC interactions.
    2. Any OOC chatter must be kept to a minimum and marked accordingly.
  4. Discussions of trade may not be brought up in DMs between individuals.
    1. If a sale is completed, sending IC letters through DMs to discuss places and times to meet is permitted.
  5. Auction, including bidding, may be performed on the commerce board in character with proper roleplay following in-game.
    1. Any discussions of auctions or attempts to buy items in DMs are not permitted.
  6. Spamming auctions with bids is not permitted.
    1. Players may only use one character to bid on an auction at a time.

Blackboard Rules

By posting on this board, you understand the consequences that may come with it.

Your notes can be ripped with IC incentive by another player character, you may get a target put on your head, you may even get kidnapped! Anything can happen down here, so think carefully before you speak. The board here is not as obliged to be as kind to those who post on it.

On the blackboard, there is no OOC consent to tear down notes.

  1. Do not tear down notes without having given prior IC warning, e.g., in the form of a response or scribbling out bits of detail on the original.
  2. Night’s Edge-affiliated staff members may tear down posts labeled under the “Dark Content” tag without warning.
    1. Players must still give IC notice.
  3. Do not post bounties or wanted individuals on the blackboard unless they already have a bounty on the bounty board in Night’s Edge.
  4. Please keep casual postings to the guild board; this includes things like marriage invitations or tea parties, as the Night’s Edge board is meant to allow you to write darker posts more freely.
